Tip 28: Recent Notifications applet

.

Today on webup8 a useful applet was posted, which I like to share. Installation is quite simple & worked on my Ubuntu 10.10 box.

Install the Recent Notifications applet in Ubuntu

Recent Notifications applet comes with a PPA for Ubuntu Karmic, Lucid and Maverick. Add the PPA and install Recent Notifications using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jconti/recent-notifications
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install recent-notifications

Once installed, right click a GNOME panel, select "Add to panel" and add "Recent Notifications".
Cool :)

TIP 27: Activating USB under VMBox 4.2x

.
Problem:
How can I get my "damn" USB-drive attached to my virtual Machine under VMBox ??? :(

Description:
When you have Linux (here: Ubuntu 10.10 or LinuxMint) as VMBox host, the USB selector is grayed out  E V E N  when you have an USB filter manually installed for your VM (virtual machine) and marked as active (check marked).

This is due to the nature of the LINUX rights system, meaning you lack system rights on VMBox. Thankfully a solution is NOT far NOR difficult to achieve.

Solution:
Go here * and follow this tut basically step by step. Now under Ubuntu 10.x or LinuxMint the Gui/icons look a bit different, but other than that it is the same and has worked for me :)

Risky Business ?

.
by Johnny

The amazing Internet never stops to mesmerize me. Such an example I found today on webup8.com (which is one of my favorite site). A guy named "Mahdi" has published his 2.36.xx Kernel, streamlining some additional code for I guess "efficiency" etc.

Anyway process works exactly how described, however there are at least a couple of hurdles:

(1)  On 32-bit systems Ubuntu 10.10 installs the "pae" extension during install (when Internet access is available) meaning full 4GB (3,9GB RAM available if such quantity is installed) accessable for system
(2) VMWare Player integration fails due to "Kernel" problem

....
PS: Thanks Johnny! (LM)

Ubuntu Installation Guide

.

I just discovered a useful, informative & illustrative site on "Installing Ubuntu". Dual-booting, errors and failures are discussed and pointed out. The only problem is "How to memorize it all, til needed " :)
